Ida Emilie Batzer, 94, passed peacefully on February 17th,, 2022. She was born on July 21st, 1927, into a world of wonder in a German hamlet by the Bugg River to Rudolf and Mathilde Dreigert. She would tell her grandchildren many interesting tales of her youth growing up in the countryside as a daughter of a tailor and fabric weaver. As a young adolescent, she experienced the beginning of WWII and saw the bombing of Warsaw from a distance. Shortly after war started, her father disappeared and her family had to leave home. They traveled across war-torn Germany as refugees. After the war, she met Siegfried Batzer. At the time, Siggy drove trucks for the British and stole apples on the side. The pair met at a barn dance where Ida was presented with an apple. They were later married and Ida gave birth to their daughter Christiane, then they moved to the United States. Throughout her life she had many jobs, including knitting baby shoes, editing and translating on Wall Street, and working for the National Inquirer. Meanwhile, Siggy worked as a tool and die maker, built their home, and worked other jobs such as fixing cigarette machines. After many years and different positions, the pair bought a motel in West Palm Beach. They lived the true American dream which included traveling the world. They lived their final chapters together enjoying their grandchildren in Upstate New York. Ida will always be remembered with every sip of peppermint tea. She was a talented cook, seamstress, gardener, storyteller, and so much more.
She is survived by her daughter Chrisiane Sauter (Patrick), grandchildren Emilie Peck (Jonathan), Rebecca Ricker (Michael), Reuben May, Evelyn May (Ryan Hinrichsen), and great grandchildren, Violet, Calvin, Linus, Marie Jean, and Diana.
