Harold Vollmer Obituary

Harold G. Vollmer

Harold Vollmer is at peace and has gone to his heavenly home on July 16. Harold was a devoted family man, giving his children his love and his strong sense of responsibility to community. His love of farming and farmers markets was also a constant in his life and a value he gave to his children as well. As an owner of Vollmer Farms, he built a successful greenhouse operation that has bloomed over the years because of his hard work, keen eye on improving and growing the farm and the help and dedication of his son, David. When he was able to pass the farm to his son, David, it was a proud moment for Harold. He then dedicated himself to helping his son carry on the the tradition of growing.
Harold was an active member of his farming community as well. He was an active member of the Onondaga Vegetable Growers, acting as their president for many of those years. He was also active as a board member of the NYS Vegetable Growers Association.
He was also active with the CNY Regional Market, first as one of the first Growers to transition from the String Bean Market on Pearl St. to sell farm produce to consumers at the current regional market on Park St. He spent over 20 years on the market’s board of directors, many of those years as President. Even after retirement, Harold was an active seller of farm products at the CNY Regional Market, helping his son David to sell the farm’s plants and produce.
Harold was an active member of his church, Collamer United Church, having just celebrated his 75th year of membership in the congregation. He not only participated in weekly services and activities of the church, but spent many years on the church board and giving toward the many missions the church participated in.
He was also an active member of his community. He spent many years on the Town of DeWitt Zoning Board of Appeals. He personally visited every site that came before the board to ensure his decisions were fair to both the petitioner and to the taxpayers of the town.
He was a long time member of the North Syracuse Rotary Club. He was very proud of his club and very proud to participate in the organization’s missions.

Harold enjoyed traveling and has visited all 50 states, some several times. Along with traveling he loved his time golfing at Arrowhead Golf Course with Hank Fischer.
Harold is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lorraine Sanson Vollmer. She was his wife, his right hand on the farm and his loving caregiver. He is also survived by three children, David, Diane (Steve) Eggert and Doug (Mary) and many grandchildren, Ben, Beth, Tim, Kristen, Ryan and Jessica, and one great grandson, Warren Vollmer. He has one surviving brother, Carl, and many nieces and nephews.
