He graduated from Eastwood High School where he was recognized and awarded for his athletic skills as both a relay and marathon runner. Sam was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 18, serving his country in the European Theater. He was wounded, captured as a POW, and ultimately awarded the Purple Heart. Over the years he was also a member of the American Legion and the Society of the First Division. A communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, Sam always put family first, and rarely missed a school concert, special ceremony, graduation or commemorative occasion.
With his family by his side, Sam was a 2015 participant in Honor Flight Syracuse -Mission 005. While it has been said that "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away", the cherished memories of Sam by those who knew and loved him will live forever as he truly exemplified The Greatest Generation.
