Makie Momii Guay passed peacefully on Sunday at the age of 93. She was born in Fukuoka, Japan and survived the bombing of her home there. She married Sergeant Harold J. Guay, USAF, in December of 1952 and immigrated to the United States where she became a citizen. Makie was a gifted artist, first with oil paintings, and then pottery but her stained-glass creations were highly prized. She was also skilled in both knitting and crocheting, making sweaters and other gifts for family and friends. Makie worked as a chef in her friend's establishment, Kyoko's Restaurant. She served on a team for many years at the Festival of Nations, performing traditional Japanese dances, calligraphy, origami and other Japanese arts. Her husband of 65 years died in 2018. Her parents and sister are buried in Japan. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Richard Rybinski of Manlius, NY; her brother-in-law Wally (Mary) Guay of Mt Dora, FL; her sister-in-law Jean (Louis) Nicholson of Fly Creek, NY; two grandsons, Matthew (Rebecca) Rybinski of Rosharon, TX and Kenneth (Hannah) Rybinski of East Syracuse, NY; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Friday, November 25 th from 5-7 pm at the Gang Memorial Chapel, 104 Fordham Road in Syracuse, NY. A brief memorial service will start at 6:30. A private burial in Pulaski Village Cemetery.
