Horace William Gunter, a small town Southern man, age 97, quietly passed away in his home on Onondaga Hill on July 14th . He was born on January 17th 1928 to Toy David and Mabell Walker Gunter in Watkinsville, GA. He joined the Air Force in 1946 and was stationed in Post War Germany and involved in the Berlin Airlift during his time there. While stationed at Hancock AF Base in Syracuse, he met his future spouse, Doris M. Reith whom he married in 1954. Horace retired from his military career in 1965 and went to work in the family business, Syracuse Wire and Fence Works, branching out to G and M Post Driving Service and Gunter Enterprises. Horace was preceded in death by his loving wife, Doris. He is survived by his children Linda of Georgia, William (Shawna) of Alabama, David, Deborah (Peter Kumanowski), Lisa (Douglas Leonhardt) and Dagmar Weissenfels of Berlin. Grandchildren Andrew Gunter, Stephen & Christopher Kumanowski, Alyssa Prentice, Brianna Leonhardt, Alexis Major, Emma Leonhardt, and Katie Gunter and great grandchildren Carter Davis, Maverick Prentice and Maddie Major. He also leaves behind his brother Ray of Byers, Co and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday July 23rd at 11:00am in Holy Family Church, Fairmont.
Burial in Onondaga Veterans Cemetery with Military Honors. Calling hour on Wednesday in church prior to mass 10-11am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Disabled American Veterans (DAV)., make donations to The Disabled American Veteran's Association.
